Barclay, John

Barclay, John
(1734–98)
   Denomination Founder.
Barclay was born in Perthshire, Scotland and was educated at St Andrew’s University. As a preacher, he served congregations in Errol and Fettercairn. In 1766 he was censured for his Rejoice Evermore or Christ is All in All. He defended himself in Edinburgh, but had to travel to England to receive ordination. In 1773 he set up the Berean Assembly in Edinburgh, so called after the noble congregation of Beroeia (Acts 17:10). He also visited London and Berean communities were established there and in Bristol. His teaching differed from that of Scottish Calvinism in that he believed that the hallmark of Christianity lies in the assurance of salvation and that faith is merely the intellectual acceptance of the truths revealed in the Bible. Barclay worked tirelessly for his followers until his death and the Church grew in all major Scottish towns. By the midnineteenth century, however, the impetus was lost and most Bereans had merged with the Congregationalists.
